How the Barbell Plate Calculator Works

The total weight of a loaded barbell is made up of the bar plus the plates on both sides. FitnessScopes first subtracts the bar weight from the target total. The remaining weight is divided equally between both sides of the bar. The calculator then uses the available plate sizes to determine which plates can be loaded on each side.

(Target weight − bar weight) ÷ 2 = weight required per side

Check Your Bar Weight

Not every barbell weighs the same. A common Olympic-style bar may weigh 20 kg or 45 lb, but lighter training bars and specialist bars can differ. Check the actual bar and the gym equipment before relying on a calculated loading setup.

Barbell loading disclaimer: Plate availability and bar weight vary by gym. Always verify the loaded bar before lifting.
